What is Aave?
Aave is a decentralized finance protocol allowing users to borrow and lend crypto. Lenders accumulate interest through placing digital assets into engineered liquidity pools. Borrowers can implement their crypto as collateral and take out a loan through this liquidity. Launched in November 2017, Aave was initially known as ETHLend but rebranded to Aave (which means “ghost” in Finnish) in September 2018. The rebranding helps explain why the ticker is so disparate from its name. AAVE offers holders discounted fees on the platform and works as a governance token by giving owners a say in how the protocol develops moving forwards.
Aave Founders
Stani Kulechov founded Aave, along with its predecessor ETHLend. Kulechov was frustrated by the absence of lending applications on Ethereum and built his project before decentralized finance. An early adopter in the blockchain space, Kulechov rebranded ETHLend as Aave to expand its services beyond Ether lending. Kulechov says that Aave targets people who are already in the cryptocurrency community.
Aave Key Points
Compared to other competitors, there are several Aave selling points. In the DeFi craze of 2020, it was one of the most significant projects for the total value of crypto locked in its protocol. Aave allows people to lend and borrow around 20 cryptocurrencies, which gives users a more substantial amount of choice. “Flash loans” are one of their flagship products and have been billed in the DeFi space as the first uncollateralized loan option. Of course, the catch is that they must be paid back in the same transaction. Another central selling point is the ability for those who borrow through Aave to alternate between variable and fixedinterest rates. Though fixed rates can give a certain amount of security about costs during times of volatility in the crypto markets, variable rates are useful if the borrower predicts prices falling soon.
